TAMBA Trail Events

TAMBA (Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association) has a lot of great events coming up within the next month, read below and please help out or join in the fun where possible. Don't forget to stay up to date on the TAMBA Facebook page and website: http://mountainbiketahoe.org

Toads Trail Work
The TAMBA Trails Committee will be meeting with the Forest Service soon to give input on trail work for Toads (Saxon Creek) Trail. Toads is arguably one of Tahoe's most iconic mountain bike rides, which is the reason we all need to do our part in keeping this trail open and properly maintained. If you are interested in helping out with trail work on Toads, please email TAMBA at: info@mountainbiketahoe.org

Christmas Valley Trail Work Day - August 20th
This month's TAMBA trail day is on Saturday, August 20th. They will be working on rounding turns, enhancing flow, bashing down square edge rocks, and fixing drainage problems. Free lunch and post work bbq with drinks will be provided to all volunteers (plus some schwag to give away). Meet at 9am at the lower parking lot on South Upper Truckee, and remember that any time you can volunteer for all or just part of the day is much needed!

Rose to Toads Ride - August 28th or September 6th
1st annual TAMBA Rose to Toads Ride will be held on either August 28th or September 6th. If you are interested please email what date would be best. This will be an epic ride, and even if you don't plan to ride the entire 60+ miles, there's plenty of spots to shorten the ride (Spooner, Kingsbury, Armstrong) - so pick your game. This will be a self supported ride with everyone meeting at the Mount Rose TRT trail head at 730am. This ride is truly a Tahoe epic, linking together some of the best trails North to South (Rim Trail, Flume, Freel Peak, Star Lake, Toads).

Trail Update

Mr. Toad's, riding up from Big Meadow trailhead, is clear of snow. Saxon Creek (Mr. Toads), on the upper part, still has some snow in spots until you pass the technical rock garden section (Waterfall) then it's clear all the way down. Don't let a little snow stop you from riding this awesome trail. If you plan to do a loop, we at Watta Bike Shop encourage you to park at our lot. We have a great selection of nutrition products like Hammer and Road Runner next to our shop has a huge selection of drinks, especially beer. Mt. Rose Rim Trail to Flume is covered with snow at the beginning of the trail, but once you get past that the trail is clear and in good condition. Remember, this trail is only ridable on even days.

Quick Update on South Shore Trails

Mr. Toads is still full of snow at the Rim Trail coming from either side - Armstrong Pass or Big Meadow. The ride up the downhill side of Toads past the stairs has great conditions. Armstrong Pass is clear of snow all the way up to the Rim Trail. Coral Loop and the Armstrong Connector are also in great condition. TAMBA (Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association) and the Forrest Service, along with volunteers, have been working hard to improve the features. Bench Ride (off of North Benjamin) is clear all the way up to the bench with excellent terrain conditions. So get out and ride!

Corral Loop: Now Open

Map

Just thought you might like to know that Corral Loop is now open for business.. or um.. biking. This trail is loads of fun and we highly recommend it! You can bike up Oneidas or have someone drop you off at the trail head for a great ride. Feel free to send us photos and videos of you and your friends tearing up this trail!

Are You Lost?

Well not anymore!

That's right! Because we have just added a brand-spankin' new section to the site, trail maps galore! If you click on the Trails link in the nav bar, you will be taken to a map. This map is the key to new adventures and lots of fun.

Here's a quick walk-through on how to find your way around this new part of our site...

Map

This is the map mentioned above. Clicking on any of the golden stars and trail names will take you to a page with relevant information to said trail. At the top of this page you will find a nifty header that will say the name of the trail who's info you are currently viewing (just in case you're forgetful like us!).

Trail Name

The first bit of information is a summary of the selected trail which will give you an idea of what the trail is like. You will also see "Ride Type" following the summary which lets you know if the trail is a loop, point to point, or something else.

Summary

Then we get into the more technical stuff.. Such as "Technical Info" which gives distance, elevation change, difficulty, estimated ride time, and more. It looks a bit like this:

Technical

If you've gotten this far and the trail doesn't have you cowering in fear, this next bit might scare you away. Don't worry though, it's pretty simple to understand and will be quite helpful to you on your ride. We're of course talking about the trail map. First, you will see a chart that depicts the elevation change throughout the trail. Then, if you take a look at the map key, you'll be able to see that the letter "E" means "Easiest" and that the skull and crossbones means you'll most likely die at this point (just kidding, but do be careful in these areas!) Now you're ready to look at the actual route of the trail without coming back to us crying because you didn't read what the symbols mean and had no idea what that graph was for. (note: clicking on the map will bring up a larger view that you can print out and take with you)

Map

Following the trail map is a detailed ride description that marks key points throughout the ride. It's a good idea to take a look at this just to make sure you stay on track and don't end up somewhere in Arizona!

That's about all you need to know, and while we didn't cover everything, we're sure this article will help get you on your feet. If you still have questions or are just plain lost, click that discuss button and post a reply in the forums where one of us will do our best to help you out!

Cinco de What?

As we all know, today is the infamous US / Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo, which celebrates Mexican heritage and history. So what exactly does the "fifth of May" have to do with Wattabike? Good question! While we may not have the answer to that, we do have some cool new content coming out on Sies de Mayo (that's Spanish for May 6th).

And by "cool new content," we of course mean the trails section of the site is finally ready to be released! You're going to be able to view a description of trails around the lake, ride lengths, ride times, elevations, maps, and more! Oh, what's that? You want to see a preview of what's to come? Really? You guys can't wait just one more day?! Okay fine.. Here's a small sample of what's to come:

Maps Teaser

That's about it for today but check back tomorrow because not only will we have all these goodies for you, we will be posting a detailed "how-to" article on how to find your way around the Trails pages. Good stuff.

We Need Your Help!

No, really. We have some new features for you guys and in order to make them as awesome as possible, we'll need a little help from the community.

If you click on the "Forums" button to the left, you'll be taken to our community forums. If you don't know what forums are, they're a place for all of you guys to get together and chat, set up bike rides, post bikes and parts for sale, share photos and videos, and much, much more! We hope to get the Wattabike community as involved as possible, so make an account on the forums and post away!

Do you have some awesome photos or videos you'd like to share with the world? Well here's your chance! Clicking the "Media" button in the Navagation Bar, you'll find a sweet flash-based photo gallery. For now, we only have some crazy place-holder images on there but would love to have some amazing shots of our local riders. If you've got anything to share, there's a link at the bottom of the galelry where you can send us what you got!

That's all for this update, but expect to hear from us again soon - we've got much more in store for this season!

2011: Open For Business!

Hey Lake Tahoe, Wattabike is back for the 2011 season of biking! Stop by our shop in Meyers, right next to Roadrunner Gas & Liquor and check us out, or just come in to say hi.

As you can see, we've added some trail info to the right hand side of the website and will soon be integrating trails and maps directly into Wattabike.com! We are also working on getting the forums up, as well as a gallery of member's photos and videos.

Check back soon and get ready for a brand new community experience to accompany you this year!
